Reduction gearbox: Choosing the appropriate speed reducer
A reduction gearbox (speed reducer) is
an enclosed system that transmits mechanical energy to the output device. It is
used in automation control systems to reduce the power source speed to reach
desired output speeds while increasing the torque the input creates. The output
gear is more dental than the input gear. The output shaft of a gearbox rotates
at a slower rate than the input shaft, multiplying the torque. To recap, they
take an input power source and increase the torque while decreasing the speed.
Its Types:
Finding the right speed reducer for your application is essential to ensure
performance.
·
Planetary
Gearbox: known for their high endurance&accuracy,
they are used for applications requiring strong accelerations (robotics) and
for slow speed but high torque applications(industrial rotary furnaces). This
design uniformly distributes power through the gears enabling this system to
achieve a high torque in a small space.
·
Worm Gearbox: used where a high transmission ratio is
required. It includes a large diameter worm that interlocks with the teeth on
the peripheral area of the gear. They are cheaper, make less noise as they are
vibration-free, and are preferred for conveyors&winches.
·
Helical
Gearbox: It is compact and uses a low amount
of power. Its teeth are cut at an angle to the face of the gear. When two of
the teeth start to engage the contact is gradual. It can transmit motion&power
between either parallel or right-angle shafts.
·
Bevel gear: They are highly precise&powerful torque
converters and used if you need high torque. It interlocks the gear’s beveled
edges and transfers the rotation from one to another. Used in high-powered
conveyors, mobile machinery.
