Reduction Gearbox: Reduction Gearbox Maintenance

Any process that necessitates gearbox replacement is going to be costly, and a budget for a full redesign, whether scheduled or unplanned, will be substantial. Regular checks and upkeep are necessary for extending the operating life of your reduction gearbox.

Inspections of gearing should be performed with the least amount of disruption to the gear mechanism or orientation as possible. Hence, the state of the gear teeth can be used to determine if the gearing mechanism is in good working order. The following items would be inspected for reducing downtime and ensuring the reduction gearbox has the longest working life possible:

Check that the gearbox is running within the mechanical&thermal ratings specified by the manufacturer. Many times, gearboxes are used in applications that exceed their design specifications and are powered by higher input power than the limit recommended.

The gearboxes are often used in filthy&dusty environments which could lead to a rise in running temperature or even gearbox pollution. So it should be cleaned&dusted often.

Inspect the gearbox for oil leakage at the input and output shafts. Leaks mean that seals have failed, bringing dust/dirt/water into the system.

Lubrication should be performed following the gearbox manufacturer's specifications for type, rating, and quantity.

Breather: Water/dust/dirt should not be allowed to enter the gearbox from the breather. They must be of the right design and kept clean at all times.

Using an infrared temperature gun, track the gearbox temperature daily, and watch for any unexpected increases in temperature.

Remove the inspection covers to test gear tooth wear. Look for wear indicators such as pitting and spalling. Inspect the contacts between gear teeth for misalignment, which may indicate bearing wear.
