A Gear coupling is a mechanism that connects two shafts at their ends to convey electricity. When a torque limit is surpassed or a problem occurs, couplings do not generally detach or allow couplings to disengage from shafts while in operation. However, there are a few torques limiting couplings that slide or disconnect when a torque limit is exceeded or a problem occurs.

Gaskets and O-rings are used in coupling components to prevent lubricant from leaking within the connection. Carbon steel is commonly used for general-purpose gear couplings. These torsionally rigid couplings may take some stress loading due to their design, but they cannot absorb considerable amounts of energy.

The couplings must be lubricated regularly, usually every 1-2 years depending on the duty and kind of lubricant used. The coupling has a service life of 3-5 years, and in many cases, 5-10 years, if properly maintained.
